Q

process of red blood cell for c02 exchange

A

1) CO2 diffuses into red cell
2) CO2 + H2O react by carbonic anhydrase to form bicarbonate acid
3) Dissociates to release H+ and Hc03
4) H buffers to hemoglobin=hemoglobin acid
5) HCO3- released into plasma in exchange for Cl-
6) this process happens until goes to lungs where its all reversed

Q

what is Respiratory acidosis

A

too much co2 that soon mix with water in blood to make carbonic acid which lowers pH= more acidic = called acidosis

Q

what is Respiratory alkalosis

A

low level of c02 in blood so ph increases= alkaline so kidney makes bicarbonate ions to lower blood ph back to normal

Q

what is Metabolic acidosis

A

too much acid in blood decreasing blood ph = more acidic

to fix it lungs repsond by hyperventilating which blow of c02 to have a acid-base balance and brings back ph back to normal

Q

what is Metabolic alkalosis

A

too much bicarbonate= high blood ph= alkaline

to fix this, lungs slow down breathing so c02 is low in body, this helps restore the balance between acids and bases and brings ph back to normal

Q

why is the interconversion between carbonic acid and c02 important?

A

regulates the balance of c02 in body and maintain ph of bodily fluids
