Definition of niche?
Includes abiotic & biotic resource that a species uses. Where, what, when, and how it uses them.
Whats the difference between fundamental and realized niches?
Fundamental is the potential an organism has to take up, and realized is what the organism actually occupies.
Definition of mutualism?
Symbiosis that is beneficial to both group (+/+)
Def of Commensalism
Symbiosis that benefits one group and doesn’t bother the other group (+/0)
Def of parasitism?
Symbiosis that has negative affects on one group and positive on another group. (-/+) Longer relation with organism.
Def of predation
Symbiosis that has negative affects on one group and positive on another group. (-/+) Short term relation with organism.
Def of herbivory
Symbiosis that has negative affects on one group and positive on another group. (-/+)
Faculative vs. obligatory
Receives benefits from organisms but can survive without each other. Obligatory species entirely depends on each other.
What is likely to happen if the niches of two species overlap a little? Overlap a lot?
There will be some competition but they will still be able to coexist. If the overlap was a lot there would be so much competition that one organism might take over another.
How can niche partitioning increase the biodiversity of a community? What are some ways that species can partition their niches?
It can increase biodiversity by diving resources, minimizing competition, and allowing more species to occupy the same habitat. They can partition by consuming different food resources.
