4.2 Study Guide Flashcards
(11 cards)
Def of Nitrogen Fixation
The bacteria take the nitrogen in the air and change it into a form that plants can use.
Def of Nitrification
Take ammonium and change it into nitrates for plants to use.
Def of Dentrification
Takes nitrates and puts it back into the atmosphere as nitrogen gases.
Inputs and outputs of photosynthesis
Inputs: Water, carbon dioxide, and light energy. Outputs: Glucose and Oxygen
Inputs and outputs of cellular respiration
Inputs: Glucose and oxygen. Outputs: Carbon dioxide, water, and energy (ATP)
What type of organisms perform the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Plants,Plants cells, bacteria, Algae
How humans affect the carbon and nitrogen cycles
We affect the carbon and nitrogen cycles by burning fossil fuels and deforestation. These can lead to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and nitrogen compounds.
How BTB (a pH indicator) works
Changes color depending on the pH of the solution. Acidic will turn yellow, Basic is blue, Neutral appears greenish-blue.
Differentiate between how energy and how carbon flow through a food chain
Energy flows in one direction from producers to consumers gradually lessening at each level. While carbon cycles through the ecosystem being taken by plants through photosynthesis and passed along to consumers when they consume the plants.
Predict how BTB (a pH indicator) will change color in a test tube depending upon:The contents (plant, animal, both)
The BTB color in the test tube with the plant in it will be blue as it is photosynthesizing and consuming carbon dioxide. With just the animal the BTB will probably be yellow as the animals is releasing Co², and with both it will be a neutral color since its stabilizing the carbon.
Predict how BTB (a pH indicator) will change color in a test tube depending upon: he condition (light or dark)
If the tube is light the tube will be less acidic since if there is a plant in there is will be able to do photosynthesis and without it, the plant will not be able to create photosynthesis so there will be more carbon dioxide.
