6.1 Study Guide Flashcards
(8 cards)
Def of Isomer
Same molecular formula but different structure/shape.
The structure of each functional group and whether it is polar, + charged, - charged, or nonpolar
Hydroxyl: OH, Polar
Carbonyl: COH, Polar
Carboxyl: Polar negative charge
Amino: NH2, Positive charge
Sulfhydryl: SH, Slightly Polar
Phosphate:PO4, Negative charge, Polar
Methyl: CH3, No polar
Def of Monomer
Molecules that are formed to make polymers.
Def of Polymer
Polymers are molecules broken back down into Monomer by hydrolysis/ digestion
What happens during a dehydration synthesis reaction
One Monomer donates OH- other Monomer donates H+ and together they form H2O
What happens during a hydrolysis reaction.
Uses H2O to break down Polymers, cleave off one Monomer at a time. Water is split to H+ and OH-
Explain why carbon is a versatile building block for organic molecules
Carbon is a versatile building block because it can form four covalent bonds with other atoms. The structure will change functions.
Describe the relationship between all of the terms: monomers, polymers, dehydration synthesis, and hydrolysis
Polymers are multiple monomers put together. Dehydration synthesis is the reverse of hydrolysis/ digestion.
