4.1 Study Guide Flashcards
(12 cards)
Def of Biomass
The total quantity of organisms in a given area.
Def of Productivity
The rate of production of new biomass by an population, community or individual.
Def of Efficiency
An organism or biological system is able to convert energy or resources into useful work.
Inputs and outputs of photosynthesis
Inputs are carbon dioxide, water, and light energy as outputs are glucose and oxygen.
Inputs and outputs of respiration
Inputs are glucose and oxygen as outputs are carbon dioxide, water, and energy (ATP)
What type of organisms perform the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration?
Plants, some algae, and certain types of bacteria’s,
What is shown in a pyramid of energy vs. a pyramid of numbers vs. a pyramid of biomass?
the biomass pyramid shows the amount of living matter at each trophic level while an energy pyramid shows the amount of energy transferred and the pyramid of numbers shows the numerical proportion of different organisms at each level.
Applying the rule of 10 to an energy pyramid to determine the energy available at each trophic level
So only 10% of energy moves from one level to the next so if we had 10,000 energy then the primary consumer would have 1,000 since we took 10% then it would be 100 for the secondary consumers and so on.
Why it is considered more efficient to eat at a lower trophic level vs. a higher trophic level
More effect is to eat at a lower trophic level since the plants have higher energy and can support larger populations.
Predict how the amount of solar energy in a location relates to productivity
If you had more solar energy you could expect more productivity to plants since it will effect its photosynthesis and create more biomass.
Predict how the amount of solar energy in a location relates to biomass
The more solar energy in a given area can grow the biomass of that ecosystem since it will create more producers which will allow consumers to eat and reproduce allowing for the biomass to get larger.
