What is the corpus luteum?
A
An endocrine organ acting on the endometrium to keep it intact for pregnancy.

Describe the histology of the corpus luteum.
A
- Formed from granulosa and theca interna cells in the ovary that remain after ovulation
- Greatly enlarge to form granulosa lutein and theca lutein cells
- contain features of steroid-releasing cells

What hormones are secreted by the corpus luteum? What is the function?
A
- Secretes progesterone (and estrogens)
- Prepares the endometrium of the uterus for implantation (secretory phase)
- progesterone inhibits LH release from the pituitary

What causes the formation of the corpus luteum?
A
- LH from the anterior pituitary
- If no pregnancy ensues, it degenerates
- If pregnancy occurs, hCG from conceptus and placenta maintains the corpus luteum of pregnancy
