Describe the histology of the corpus luteum.

A
  • Formed from granulosa and theca interna cells in the ovary that remain after ovulation
  • Greatly enlarge to form granulosa lutein and theca lutein cells
    • contain features of steroid-releasing cells

What hormones are secreted by the corpus luteum? What is the function?

A
  • Secretes progesterone (and estrogens)
  • Prepares the endometrium of the uterus for implantation (secretory phase)
    • progesterone inhibits LH release from the pituitary

What causes the formation of the corpus luteum?

A
  • LH from the anterior pituitary
  • If no pregnancy ensues, it degenerates
  • If pregnancy occurs, hCG from conceptus and placenta maintains the corpus luteum of pregnancy
