The city of Genoa is located on the Mediterranean coast, between the sea and the mountains, so the city is long but narrow. Towards the mountains the city rises steeply.

Genoa is a city built along the coast that goes up into the nearby mountains. So parts of the city go up steeply into the mountains and to access them you have to use roads that are not suitable for vehicles. These are often called salita, or scalinata, and are only convenient for pedestrians. The B&B I Rivi is located on the scalinata di Lecari, which is just a long set of steps. I believe the name salita comes from the verb salire. La Salita di San Gerolomo translates as Saint Gerolomo’s Rise. On the other hand, scalinata comes from the word scala, and seems to mean a small staircase. In reality, La Scalinata Lecari is not small, but large and daunting.
Now begins the climb that will take you, through a big vineyard surrounded by woods, to the asphalt road.
