Energy Pathways and Energy Continuum Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the 3 ENERGY PATHWAYS?
- ATP-PC
- Anaerobic Glycolysis
- Aerobic Glycolysis
Describe how the ATP-PC ENERGY PATHWAY works
- ATP broken down into ADP+Pi via ATPase, exo so energy
- PC broken down via Creatine Kinase which allows ADP+Pi to recombine to be used again
What is the:
YIELD?
SITE?
FUEL?
DURATION?
RECOVERY TIME?
EXAMPLE IN SPORT?
Of the ATP-PC SYSTEM?
Yield- 1 ATP
Site- Sarcoplasm
Fuel- PC
Duration- 7-10 seconds
Recovery time- 30-180 seconds
Example- 100m sprint
Describe how the ANAEROBIC GLYCOLYSIS ENERGY PATHWAY works
- Glycogen broken down into Glucose through Glycogenolysis
- Glucose is converted to Pyruvate via PFK
- If enough O2 present, Pyruvate send to Mito
- If not, Pyruvate is converted to Lactate via Lactate Dehydrogenase
What is the:
YIELD?
SITE?
FUEL?
DURATION?
RECOVERY TIME?
EXAMPLE IN SPORT?
Of the ANAEROBIC GLYCOLYSIS SYSTEM?
Yield- 2 ATP
Site- Sarcoplasm
Fuel- Glucose (incomplete breakdown)
Duration- 10-90 seconds
Recovery time- 8 minutes to 2 hours
Example- 400m sprint
Describe how the AEROBIC GLYCOLYSIS SYSTEM works
- Pyruvate —> CoenzA—> Acetyl CoenzA—> Citric Acid
- Citric Acid enters Krebs Cycle in which 2 ATP molecules and NADH2+FADH2 are produced
- NADH2+FADH2 Transport H and C atoms to inner membr. of Mito to the ETC
- In ETC, series of oxidation reactions occur, producing 2 34ATP+CO2+H20
What is the:
YIELD?
SITE?
FUEL?
DURATION?
RECOVERY TIME?
EXAMPLE IN SPORT?
Of the AERBOIC GYLOCOLYSIS SYSTEM?
Yield- 36 ATP
Site- Mitochondria
Fuel- Glyocogen
Duration- Longer than 3-minutes
Recovery- 1-3 days depending on duration and intensity
Example- Marathon
What dos the ENERGY CONTINUUM refer to?
Relative contribution of each Energy System to an Exercise Performance
What does the DOMINANT SYSTEM USED depend on in terms of ENERGY CONTINUUM?
- Intensity
- Duration
