Injuries Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is an ACUTE INJURY?
Injury caused by sudden twisting, turning, falling or collision
What are the TYPES of ACUTE INJURIES?
- Acute Fractues
- Cruciate Ligament injury
- Dislocation
- Sprain
- Soft tissue damage
- Achilles tendon
How can a CRUCIATE LIGAMENT INJURY OCCUR?
- When foot is planted on ground and sudden force causes it to bend backwards
- Can also occur from twisting or side to side movements
How can an ACUTE FRACTURE OCCUR?
Direct impact, fall or violent twisting movement
What are the 2 TYPES of ACUTE FRACTURES? Describe them
- Open: When a fractured bone pierces the skin= risk of infection
- Closed: When bone fractures but does not pierce skin
What are the 2 TYPES of ACUTE CLOSED FRACTURES? Describe them
- Simple: A straight break
- Greenstick: When the bone bends and breaks on one side
How can DISLOCATION OCCUR?
Sudden trauma dislodging a bone from a joint
What is a SPRAIN? How does it OCCUR?
- Tear of a ligament decreasing stability of a joint
- Ankle: inversion/eversion
- Knee: Sudden twists
- Wrist: Falling or outstretched hand
What is SOFT TISSUE DAMAGE?
Any trauma to the skin
How can an ACUTE ACHILLES TENDON INJURY OCCUR?
When sports require quick acceleration and deceleration with pivoting
What is an OVERUSE INJURY?
- Injuries that occur over time
- More difficult to diagnose and treat
What are the 4 TYPES of OVERUSE INJURIES?
- Strain
- Shin Splints
- Tendonitis
- Stress Fractures
What is a STRAIN?
- Tear or pulling of a muscle or tendon
- Usually acute but without proper care, it can turn into chronic pain
What are SHIN SPLINTS?
- AKA Periostitis
- Inflammation of periosteum from repeated stress from activities on hard surfaces
What are STRESS FRACTURES? How can it OCCUR?
- Micro-fracture caused by too much stress on a bone that develops overtime
- Occurs from overtraining, poor nutrition
What is TENDONITIS? How can it OCCUR?
- Repetitive loading of a tendon exceeding the ability to handle load
- Overtraining
- Biomechanical errors in technique
What are the 2 TYPES of TENDONITIS on the SPEC?
- Golfers elbow: Pain and inflammation on medial elbow
- Tennis elbow: Pain and inflammation on lateral elbow
