Flashcards in Femur Deck (3):

Extracapsular fractures

more common in young & middle aged people
blood supply to head of femur intact - no avascular necrosis
leg is shortened & laterally rotated

Name the 2 types of proximal femur fractures

1. intracapsular fracture
2. extracapsular fracture

Intracapsular fracture

more common in elderly esp. women - trip / stumble
normally within capsule of joint
damage femoral circumflex artery --> avascular necrosis of feoral head
distal fragment - pulled up + laterally rotated (up and side)
shown as: shorter in leg length, toes point laterally (as femur fractured)
