Lecture 12 Flashcards
(18 cards)
Indeterminate growth
most plants experience this and means that they continue to grow for the duration of their life. allows plants more exposure to sunlight, soil, and air
Angiosperms characterized according to life cycle duration
- annuals
- biennials
- perennials
Annuals
complete lifecycle in one year of less (crops)
Biennials
complete lifecycle in 2 years (beets/carrots)
Perennials
live and reproductive for many years (trees/shrubs)
Plant growth made possible by tissues called..
meristems
Meristems
consist of cells that divide frequently generating more cells. some of these new cells remain in the meristem and continue to divide while other differentiate being incorporated into the tissue of plant
Apical meristems
located at tips of roots and buds of shoot. enables roots to push through the soil and shoots to increase exposure to life/CO2
Primary growth
cell division here produces new cells allowing the plant to grow in length
Root cap
tip of root covered by this which protects the cells of the apical meristem which are actively dividing
Growth in length occurs just behind the root tip with 3 areas of distinct cells
- zone of cell division
- zone of elongation
- zone of maturation
Zone of cell division
contains the cells of the root apical meristem and cells that derive from it. new cells of the root are produced here (root cap cells)
Zone of elongation
root cells here elongate (10x). pushes the root tip hurter into soil, cells lengthen and don’t expand because cellulose finer arrangement, cells take up water and the cellulose fibres separate expanding like an accordion
Zone of differentiation
all 3 plant tissues complete their development here. cells in the vascular cylinder differentiate into primary xylem and primary phloem. occurs because of differential gene expression
Secondary growth
woody plants continue to grow in girth once primary growth is complete
Lateral meristems
secondary growth occurs because of activity in these stems. arranged into cylinders called vascular cambium and cork cambium
Vascular cambrium
cylinder of meristem cells one cell thick between the primary xylem and primary phloem
Secondary growth adds..
layers of vascular tissue on either side of the vascular cambrium
