Progestin-only pills
*contain only progestins and are
sometimes called the “minipill.”
*They need to be taken daily and
continuously.
* A frequent side effect is
breakthrough bleeding.
Have a failure rate of 9% on
routine use
Progestin-only injectable (Depo
Provera)
an injectable form of progesterone given
once
every 13 weeks IM/SC, with a failure rate
of 6% under regular use
Contraindication
for DMPA ( depo provera )
- Pregnancy (known or suspected)
- Vaginal bleeding of unknown aetiology.
- Breast cancer (known or suspected)
- Liver disease
- Allergy to the injection or to one of the
components
**A history of VTE or thrombophlebitis is not a
contraindication
Disadvantage of DMPA

Progestin-only subcutaneous implant (Nexplanon
uses etonogestrel progesterone .
o A frequent side effect is break- through bleeding.
o Failure rate is <1%.
