CSF FLOW

LATERAL VENTRICLE - interventricular foramen or Foramen of Monroe - 3RD VENTRICLE - Aqueduct of Sylvius or Iter - 4TH VENTRICLE - Foramen of Magendie and Luschka - SUBARACHNOID SPACE - arachnoid villi - superior sagittal sinus - tansverse sinus - sigmoid sinus - internal jugular vein

2

Clear, colorless fluid produced mainly by the choroid plexuses of the lateral, 3rd and 4th ventricle

Some originates from the ependymal cells lining the ventricles

Located in the SUBARACHNOID SPACE

Rate of production - 0.5 ml/min

Pessure - 60 to 150mm of water

Total volume - about 130 to 150ml

Cerebrospinal fluid

3

CSF functions

Cushions and protects the CNS from trauma

Provides mechanical bouyancy and support for the brain

Nourishes the CNS

Removes metabolites from the CNS

Serves as a reservoir and assists in the regulation of the contents of the skull

Serves as a pathway for Pineal secretions to rech the Pituitary gland

4

Physical characteristics and composition of CSF

Appearance: clear and colorless

Volume: 130ml

Bite of production: 0.5ml/min

Pressure: 60-150mm of water

Protein: 15-45mg/100ml

Glucose: 50-85mg/ 100ml

Chloride: 720-750mg/100ml

Number of cells: 0.3 lmyphocytes/cu mm

5

Consists of:

LATERAL VENTRICLE - in each cerebral hemisphere

3RD VENTRICLE - in the diencephalon

4TH VENTRICLE - in the hindbrain (between the cerebellum and pons/medulla)
