What is a mastectomy
A
To remove breast tissue and or nipple

What do we do after a mastectomy?
A
Elevate the affected side arm to prevent lymphedema
No labs or BP on that side again
Monitor for signs of infection

Signs of infection after mastectomy
A
Swelling
redness
fever
chills
elevated WBC

Lumpectomy
A
Surgery to remove cancerous tissue from the breast. Saves the breast.

Mammoplasty
A
surgery to reconstruct the breast

Why don’t you take BP/IV on the mastectomy side?
A
To prevent cellulitis and breast cancer related lymphedema
