Q

A

Research and science

Lena is working on the development of robots that clean up independently.

She is negotiating the final details of the contract as a scientist in
their institute.

This hand is modeled on that of a human.

At the moment artificial intelligence is still programmed by humans.
Who knows how long.

6
Q

A

A little helper?

A little helper takes over the annoying vacuum cleaning, another mows the lawn while I lie relaxed on the couch and talk to my two artificial friends Siri and Alexa about the great restaurants near me.

While I’m sitting there, I quickly check again on my smartphone whether the room temperature is good at home or whether I should turn on the heating when I’m out and about.

To some it all sounds a bit utopian, but for many others it is commonplace these days.

A lot of things are smart today, i.e. networked with one another, and should make our lives easier.

But artificial intelligence should soon be able to do a lot more.

7
Q

Angefangen hat das Ganze bereits im 18. Jahrhundert.

A

It all started in the 18th century.

At that time there were the first mind games with the idea that the
human thinking and feeling would also have to be automated.

But it was not until 1956 that the foundation stone was laid for serious research on this topic.

At that time, young scientists from various disciplines met to discuss how precisely thought processes must be described so that they can be reproduced by a machine.

This so-called Dartmouth Conference is seen as the birth of artificial intelligence.

All the researchers who had traveled to New Hampshire at the time became renowned thought leaders in the field.

11
Q

A

In its infancy

At first, the researchers were very euphoric that everything would now happen very quickly and that a computer, for example, would become world chess champion within a very short time.

But there was still a long way to go.

In the meantime it has also been understood why the successes did not occur as quickly as prophesied:
In order to program a machine in such a way that it can think for itself, i.e. simulate human thinking, one must first be able to explain human thinking itself.

This is why not only computer scientists, but also psychologists and neurologists work on the development of thinking machines these days.

12
Q

A

How far are we today

In spite of everything, there were of course some initial successes:

One of the first forms of artificial intelligence was able to simulate a psychotherapist-patient conversation.

Today there are many more areas of application for artificial intelligence:
The robots playing soccer are of course very funny to look at.

But there is much more.

In medicine, robots assist doctors in operations that require the greatest possible precision.

Robots have become indispensable in the industrial production of parts, just as much as they are in space research.

For example, the autonomous robot Curiosity is on the move on Mars, exploring the planet.

13
Q

A

How far are we today

But there is also artificial intelligence that interacts directly with humans.

So-called social bots can be found on company websites, where they answer simple questions from customers, and bots are now also creating postings on Facebook.

Many forms of artificial intelligence have the ability to make autonomous decisions:
For example, they analyze the movement pattern of a smartphone user and suggest certain promotional offers.

17
Q

Was bringt die Zukunft?

A

What does the future hold?

One of the highlights so far is the Google Car, which records and analyzes a wide variety of data, not only traffic data and road maps but also the driver’s facial expression.

For example, if it detects that the driver is tired, it suggests stopping and taking a break.

Basically that’s not bad, but couldn’t it happen that at some point the suggestion could become an imposition because the machine only wants the best for people and denies them the ability to make decisions?

18
Q

Was bringt die Zukunft?

A

What does the future hold?

The thought that artificial intelligence will at some point turn away from its creator and exclude him is not so absurd.

Recently, Facebook prematurely ended an experiment in which the
artificial intelligence should negotiate to negotiate a compromise.

During the course of the experiment, not only did she begin to use a secret language that the researchers no longer understood, but she had also learned to lie.

19
Q

Was bringt die Zukunft?

A

What does the future hold?

Another interesting achievement are human-like robots that are intended to become companions and friends.

The idea is that they completely adjust to their owner and be a constant companion in everyday life.

But what does that do to our social environment?

These and many more questions will have to be discussed over the next few years.
