Ischemic Colitis Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is ischemic colitis?
A condition characterized by inflammation and injury of the colon due to insufficient blood supply
It often presents with symptoms such as blood in the stool.
What patient condition is commonly associated with ischemic colitis?
Cardiovascular disease (CVD)
Patients with CVD may have compromised blood flow, increasing the risk of ischemic events.
Where do ischemic ulcers typically occur in the colon?
At watershed areas, specifically:
* Splenic flexure
* Rectosigmoid junction
These areas are particularly vulnerable to ischemia due to their blood supply.
What can trigger ischemic colitis?
Can occur randomly or from inciting event such as recent AAA surgery
AAA stands for abdominal aortic aneurysm, and surgery can affect blood flow.
How is ischemic colitis diagnosed?
With colonoscopy to visualize the ischemic ulcers
Colonoscopy allows for direct observation and assessment of the colon.
Symptoms of ischemic colitis
Presents with crampy lower abdominal pain followed by bloody diarrhea after meals or exertion or in the heat. Fever and peritoneal signs suggest bowel necrosis.
