What is a hydrocele?
Serous fluid collection within the scrotum between the layers of the tunica vaginalis surrounding the testis.
What is the mechanism that leads to hydrocele?
Patent processus vaginalis.
What is the processus vaginalis?
An embryonic outpouching of peritoneum that descends into the scrotum.
What typically happens to the processus vaginalis
It normally obliterates shortly after birth.
What can occur if the processus vaginalis remains open?
Hydrocele or indirect inguinal hernia.
How can a hydrocele be identified?
It transilluminates when a light is shone on it.
What does USMLE recommend regarding treatment of hydrocele?
No treatment before the age of 1 is needed; most spontaneously close.
