What is a lymphoma?

A lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system.
Lymphomas can affect various parts of the lymphatic system.

Where does lymphoma usually start?
A
Usually starts in lymph nodes.
It can also be present in other areas such as the spleen and bone marrow.

What is the origin of most lymphomas?
A
Almost always B-cell in origin.
B-cells are a type of white blood cell important for the immune response.

What increased the risk for lymphomas?
A
- Epstein-Barr virus
- HIV
- General immunosuppression (e.g., chronic corticosteroids or immunosuppressant drugs)
- Autoimmune disease (e.g., SLE, Hashimoto)
These factors contribute to a higher likelihood of developing lymphoma.
