1

Define the vascular shunt mechanism

The redistribution of cardiac output during exercise

2

Define chemoreceptors

Monitor chemical changes in the body during exercise and during recovery

3

Define baroreceptors

Monitor blood pressure increases during exercise and decreases during recovery

4

Define proprioceptors

Detect increases in muscle activity during exercise and decreases demurring recovery

5

Define vasomotor control centre (VCC)

Situated in the brain and controls the vascular shunt mechanism

6

Define sympathetic stimulation

Sympathetic stimulation controls the diameter of arteriolar and pre-capillary sphincters. Increase = vasoconstriction. Decrease = vasodilation

7

Define arteriole

Small arteries that carry oxygenated blood towards the muscles and organs. Has a muscular middle layer to allow for vasoconstriction and vasodilation

8

Define pre-capillary sphincters

A small ring shaped muscle between the arteriole and capillaries that can vasoconstrict and vasodilate

9

Define vasodilation

Vasodilation is a decrease in sympathetic stimulation that causes widening of the diameter of the arteriole and pre-capillary sphincters

10

Define vasoconstriction

Vasoconstriction is an increase in sympathetic stimulation that causes a narrowing in the diameter of the arteriole and pre-capillary sphincters
