Q

What are the layers of the ovary?

A

1) surface epithelium (simple cuboidal)
2) tunica albuginea (dense CT capsule)
3) cortex (CT stroma with ovarian follicles)
4) medulla (loose CT with blood vessels)

2
Q

Where are the follicles found?

A

cortical region

3
Q

What is an ovarian follicle?

A
  • oocyte and its surrounding cells
  • there are different maturation stages of the follicle
  • primordial, primary, secondary, mature
4
Q

Oogonia (germ cells) divide by mitosis to what two daughter cells?

A

oogonia and primary oocyte

5
Q

How many primordial follicles are females born with?

A

1-2 million

6
Q

When is the primary oocyte arrested?

A

meiosis

7
Q

What effect does FSH have on the primordial follicle?

A
  • Oocyte growth
  • Follicular cell proliferation
  • Stromal fibroblast proliferation and differentiation
8
Q

What is the zona pellucida?

A

Rim of glycoproteins, important for sperm binding

9
Q

What extra layer is found in the multilaminar primary follicle?

A

granulosa

10
Q

What layers are found in the secondary follicle?

A
  • oocyte
  • zona pellucida
  • corona radiata ( granulosa cells)
  • follicular antrum (fluid filled)
  • membrana granulosa
11
Q

What does the theca interna secrete?

A

steroid precursors

12
Q

What does the theca externa do?

A

support

13
Q

In general, how do the cells of the theca interna differ form the theca externa?

A

the cells in the theca interna are more round

14
Q

What does the theca interna secrete?

A

androgens–> estrogen from the granulosa
