Sepsis Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is sepsis?
Life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated response to infection.
How does septic shock differ from sepsis?
Septic shock is a severe subset of sepsis with circulatory, cellular, and metabolic abnormalities, leading to higher mortality.
What non-specific symptoms might raise suspicion of sepsis?
General malaise, agitation, behavioral changes.
What are the components of the Sepsis Six bundle to be done within the first hour?
Oxygen, Blood tests, Antibiotics, Fluids, Lactate monitoring, Urine output monitoring.
What oxygen saturation should be maintained during sepsis management?
Above 94%, unless contraindicated.
Why are serial lactate measurements important in sepsis?
They indicate cellular/metabolic stress and illness severity.
What does the mnemonic BUFALO stand for in sepsis management?
Blood cultures, Urine output, Fluids, Antibiotics, Lactate, Oxygen.
