2.1.1 Deciding on Research Question Flashcards
(6 cards)
what is an Aim
a broard statement, establishing what the purpose of the study is; the key information the researcher wants to answer through conducting their research
Alternative Hypothesis
A testable statement that a piece of research attempts to support or reject
Directional Hypothesis
A hypothesis that shows there will be a difference in the variables
Null Hypothesis
A hypothesis that shows their will be no difference in the variables; the IV will have no effect on the DV but may affect the result; any that do occur will be down to chance
One-Tailed/Directional Hypothesis
This hypothesis states that the IV will affect the DV and states exactly what the effect will be.
It therefore makes a prediction and states the direction of the prediction.
It is used when a researcher is confident about what they expect to find.
Two-Tailed/Non-Directional Hypothesis
This hypothesis states the IV will affect the DV BUT does not state how, just that a difference will be found.
It is used when previous research is inconclusive OR a newer area of investigation
