2.1.2 Types of Variables Flashcards
(6 cards)
Independant Variable (IV)
The variable that is being manipulated by the researcher; the difference between conditions
Dependent Variable (DV)
The variable that is being measured by the researcher; the outcome or score.
Co-Variable (Co-V)
The two variables being measured within correlational research
Operationalism
Defining the above key variables in an objective, measurable way; giving a precise definition
Extraneous Variables (EV)
Variables that are not measured or manipulated but effect ALL participant behaviours, which reduces the validity of the study
Confounding Variable (Con-V)
Unwanted variables in research that are not measured or manipulated but may affect the outcomes (DV).
They are inconsistent and affect only SOME of the participants.
