RARE: Gillian Barre Syndrom (flaccid paralysis starting at foot and moving up)
Severe diarrhea for 1 week, NO fever, dehydration, organ failure, muscle cramps, hypoglycemia arrhythmia, acidosis (increases urin pH) shock and death
Urinate frequently, painful burning
Hemorrhagic Colitis, Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome
HC - bloody diarrhea, severe pain, no fever HUS - watery diarrhea, bloody, severe pain, vomiting, hemorrhaging, blood in urine (dialysis), hypoglycemia, neurological.
Diarrhea or Traveler's Disease
Watery Diarrhea, cramps, headache
Shigella HUS - hemolytic uritic syndrome
same symptoms as EHEC + blood, pus, mucus in stools
Shigellosis (sever dysentery)
1st fever, then cramps, dysentery, blood/pus. in children, freq begins with convulsions
HRG: babies to age 5
mild fever, diarrhea w/ w/out blood, nausea, vomiting. occasionally sepsis.
NO diarrhea, high fever, headache, death from necrotizing hemorrhaging (can perforate intestines), "Rose Spots" on abdomen and trunk, Multi Organ Dysfunction - wherever it goes.
mild, fish smell, thin frothy discharge, NO inflammation or pain.
vaginal infections... other places
Peridontal disease, trench mouth, ulcerating gingivitis
high amount of blood clots
rocky mountain spotted fever
fever, then spotted rash (pink flat, to red raised) (90%)
Non Gonococcal Urethritis
mild gonorrhea symptoms.

Women - preterm labor, spontaneous abortions

necrosis to muscle with gas production in tissue (can hear it). foul odor, fever, massive tissue destruction. If in blood - BP down, shock, renal failure.
Botulism and Infant Botulism
Flaccid Paralysis (descending) first occular, double vision, dilated pupils, blurred vision. difficulty swallowing, ab pain, death from resp. failure.
Infant - flaccid baby syndrome. constipation, limp neck.
Tetanus (lockjaw), Neonatal tetanus.
unvaccinated w/ deep puncture wound, or unvaccinated mothers.
(Tetany) locked jaw (massater muscle), descending until respiratory failure, back arches, face tightens, can break bones, pain, exhaustion
Anthrax - cutaneous, intestinal, pulmonary
Cutaneous - papule, blister, red, black, scab, heals (rarely systemic)
Intestinal - vomiting, intestinal pain, bleeding, death
Pulmonary - toxemia - hemorrhage, edema, necrosis. meningitis - death. early phase - mild, fever, no runny nose, no nasal congestion. late phase - death (fulmitating, fever, labored breathing, chest pain, bp down). Enough toxins made. no survivors
strep toxic shock - in blood. High fever, severe pain, BP down, multi organ failure
M-1 protein (attaches easier), necrosis - gangrene (3-4 days). red, tender, swollen skin with lesions, pain. occlude blood vessels, after 4 days necrosis.
damages heart/joints, fever, arthritis
unvaccinated children, elderly, immunodeficient
Symptoms: lungs - fever, cough with rusty sputum
blood - hemorrhagic complications, rash, sepsis
meningitis - fever, STIFF NECK
Puerperal Fever in Newborn
premature labor, membranes rupture, multiple births, mother has history of group B
meningitis, carditis, shock
Staph Colonize infections
1. no symptoms.
2. Local, recurring (boil, colonizing implants - joints, valves, IV, pacemaker). - infects the fibronectin
MRSA, VISA, VRSA
nausea, vomiting (Emetic)
Toxic Shock Syndrome
3 or more organ systems involved
high fever, rash (sunburn-like), multi organ involvement. - skin peels, loose nails, DIC, renal failure
1 out of 10 get disease if infected. HIV+, substance abuse, immunodeficient, HCW, homeless.
persistant cough (maybe bloody), fever, chest pain, fatigue, wt. loss, short of breath. can get to brain and bones.
Listeriosis (meningitis in unborn child, or cardiovascular abnormalities)
Elderly, Immunodeficient, unborn (mother subclinical) high affinity for placenta and fetal brain
headache, fever, fatigue, vomit, septicemia
