1

3 IV GAs

Propofol, etomidate, thiopental

2

Most Important Criterion

Controllable - rapid induction and recovery

3

2 Mech Theories

Lipid Theory - alters membrane, higher lipid solubility = more potent
Protein Theory - binds hydrophobic regions of GABAa Rs and enhances function

4

MAC (def and 2 points)

Minimum Alveolar concentration - 50% of patients don't report pain on incision. Very steep curve. Also MACs for different drugs are additive

5

Blood Solubility

Has to reach partial pressure to move into membranes/tissues, so high blood solubility means slow and low means fast

6

4 Stages of Anesthesia (not always seen w/ modern drugs)

Analgesia
Excitement
Surgical Anesthesia
Medullary Paralysis (death)
