Flashcards in Leg and Foot Deck (11):
1

Plantar Fasciitis

Common cause of heel pain
Inflammation of plantar aponeurosis (supports foot arches)
Caused by tight calves, high arches, flat feet and repetitive movements

2

Compartment Syndrome

Pressure builds within the crural compartments of the leg, compromising the neurovascular structures (i.e. foot)
a.k.a swelling of muscles in deep compartment
Acute or Chronic

3

Superficial Leg Group - name, innervation, vascularization, general fxn

Gastro
Soleus
Plantaris
TIBIAL nerve, TIBIAL artery
Plantarflexion, Inversion, Flexion of toes

4

Deep Leg Group - name, innervation, vascularization, general fxn, other notes

Popliteus
Flexor Hallucis Longus
Flexor Digitorum Longus
Tibilais Posterior
TIBIAL nerve, TIBIAL artery
plantarflexion, Inversion, Flexion of toes
*Tibial nerve and artery lie deep - compartment syndrome
**Covered by intermuscular septum (thick fascia)

5

Achilles Tendon - origin, insertion

shared tendon by Gastrocnemius and Soleous
inserts in calcaneous

6

Popliteus - fxn, importance

Lateral rotation of femur with respect to knee joint
Important for to initiate knee flexion by causing rotation

7

Sural Nerve - origin, action

Originates from Tibial and Fibular Nerve
Cutaneous innervation to lateral leg and lateral ankle

8

Anterior Leg - name, innervation, vascularization, general fxn

Tibialis Anterior
Extensor Hallus Longus
Extensor Digitorum Longus
Fibularis Tertius
DEEP Fibular nerve
Anterior Tibial Artery
*dorsiflexion, inversion, extension of toes

9

Lateral Leg -name, innervation, vascularization, general fxn

Fibularis Brevis
Fibularis Longus
Superficial Fibular Nerve
Fibular Artery branches
*Eversion

10

Tarsal Tunnel - medial to lateral

Tibialis Posterior
Flexor Digitorum Longus
Posterior Tibial Artery and Vein
Tibial Nerve
Flexor Hallucis Longus

11

Dorsum of foot muscles

Extensor digitorum brevis
Extensor digitorum longus
Extensor Halicus Brevis
Extensor Hallusic Longus
Tibialis Anterior
