Module 2: Electron Structure Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What’s an orbital?
A
An orbital is an area in space which can hold 2 electrons with opposite spins. They are filled in increasing energy levels. Orbitals with the same energy occupy singly, then pair.
S = 1 orbital
P = 3 orbitals
D = 5 orbitals
2
Q
What’s electron configuration?
A
The organization of electrons into orbitals and energy levels around the nucleus
3
Q
What’s an energy level?
A
The shell which an electron is in
4
Q
What’s a shell?
A
The path which an orbital is in around the nuclues. The outermost shell is the valence shell, can accept electrons.
5
Q
What’s a sub shell?
A
The categorizing of shells into different orbitals
They are divided into S,P,D and F
