Module 3: The Halogens Flashcards
(12 cards)
Whats boiling point?
The temperature where liquids boil and become a gas. Boiling point increases down group 7 due to London forces between halogens
What’s a diatomic molecules?
Molecules are made up of 2 atoms. Halogens are diatomic
What’s a displacement reaction?
A reaction in which one atom is replaced by another. Halogens undergo this reaction as reactivity decreases down the group. More reactive halogen will displace the less reactive halogen.
Whats disproportionation?
The oxidation and reduction of the same element.
This happens in water treatment, and bleach formation.
What’s electron config?
The organization of electrons into orbitals and energy and energy levels around the nuclues of an atom.
Whats induced dipole - dipole interactions?
It’s forces of attraction between molecules caused by random electron movement, causing a temporary dipole in one molecule, which creates a knock on effect.
What are London forces?
This is another name for induced dipole - dipole interactions
Whats oxidation?
The loss of electrons or increase in oxidation number
OILRIG
What’s a precipitation reaction?
A reaction which two (aq) solutions form an insoluble salt.
Halide anions undergo this reaction with aqueous silver ions
What’s a redox reaction?
A reaction where one element is oxidized, another is reduced. In group 7, 1 electron is gained
Whats reduction
The gain of electrons, decreases oxidation number
OILRIG
Explain water treatment
The addition of chlorine to water, this kills the bacteria. Chlorine gas could be created, and theres risk of chlorinated hydrocarbons
