Module 3: Enthalpy Changes Flashcards
(13 cards)
Whats activation energy?
The minimum energy needed for a reaction to take place.
Whats average bond enthalpy?
The energy needed to break one mole of a gaseous bond. Real bond Enthaply scan differ, as it considers a bond, in a range of bonds for molecules.
Explain endothermic
A reaction which takes in energy, more energy breaking than making bonds.
Whats enthalpy?
A value represents the heat content of a system.
Whats Enthaply change?
The change in heat content of a system during a reaction.
Formula = Q=mc/\ T
Q is the heat change of surroundings, m is mass, /\ T is change in temp
What’s the Enthaply change of combustion?
The enthalpy change that takes one mole of a substance to be completely combusted.
Whats enthalpy change of formation?
The enthalpy change taking place when one mole is formed from elements.
What’s the Enthaply change of neutralization?
The Enthaply change which takes place when a mole of water is formed from neutralization
What’s the Enthaply change of reaction?
The enthalpy change for a certain chemical equation
What’s an enthalpy profile diagram?
The difference in enthalpy of reactant and products, as well as activation energy of the reaction.
Explain Exothermic
A reaction giving out energy, more released bond making than breaking.
Whats hess’ law?
The Enthaply change of a reaction and the route it takes.
What are common standard conditions?
Pressure = 100kPa and temp of 298K
