Module 4: Organic Synthesis Flashcards
(8 cards)
What’s an anhydrous salt?
A salt like MgSO4 or CaCl2 which has no water and removes water from organic solutions.
Whats distillation?
A technique used where liquid is heated, then vapour is called and collected in a seperate flask to the mixture.
Condenser needs to be positioned horizontally
What’s a functional group?
A group of atoms which are responsible for the characteristics of a compound.
Whats quick fit apparatus?
Glassware which fits easily together in lots of arrangements.
Whats redistillation?
A technique used to purify organic liquids by doing multiple regular distillations.
Whats reflux?
The boiling and condensing of a mixture continuously. This ensures the mixture goes to completion.
The condesner must be positioned vertically.
What’s a separating funnel?
A piece of apparatus used to purify organic liquids by doing by removing an organic layer from aq layer.
Whats a synthetic route?
A series of steps followed to make a specific compound.
