Module 4: Analytical Techniques Flashcards
(10 cards)
Whats elemental analysis?
A sample which is analyzed to determine the proportion of elements in a compounds make up. This is done by converting a known amount of an unknown sample into simple known compounds.
Whats fragmentation?
Unstable molecular ions break down into smaller fragments.
What’s a fragment ion?
The ions formed when an unstable molecular ion breaks down during mass spec.
Whats Infared radiation?
A type of electromagnetic radiation which absorbed by covalent bonds, making them vibrate at a certain frequency,
Whats Infrared spectroscopy?
A technique used to identify different specific bonds and functional groups. Used to link global warming with increased energy usage, IR spec monitors gases causing air pollution and measure alcohol in modern breathalyzers.
What’s the M+1 peak?
A small peak on a mass spec caused by the small proportion of carbon - 13
What’s an M/Z ratio?
The mass to charge on a mass spec. Equivalent mass to an ion.
Whats mass spec?
A technique used to indenting compounds and determine relative molecular mass.
What’s the molecular ions peak?
The peak on a mass spec with highest m/z value, can determine the molecular mass of a compound
Whats molecular mass?
The total number of atoms of each element in the compound.
