Module 4: Concepts Of Organic Chem Flashcards
(24 cards)
What’s an alicyclic compound?
An aliphatic compound that is arranged in non aromatic rings
What’s an aliphatic compound?
A compound with carbon and hydrogen atoms in a straight or branched chain
What’s an alkane?
A homologous series with the general formula CnH2n+2
What’s an alkyl?
A group with the general formula CnH2n+1
What’s an aromatic compound?
An organic compound which has a benzene ring
What’s a curly arrow mean?
Shows the movement of a pair of electrons. start from a bond, lone pair or negative charge.
What’s a dipole?
A partial charge causes by the difference in Electronegativity, needs to be in a covalent bond
Whats an empirical formula?
The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element within a compound.
What’s a functional group?
A group of atoms which determines the characteristics of a compound.
What’s a general formula?
The simplest algebraic formula for any homologous serious, series which follows a pattern.
Whats heterolytic fission?
When a covalent bond breaks, one bonding atom receives BOTH electrons from the pair.
What’s a homologous series?
A series of organic compounds that have the same functional group, which only differ by -CH2
Whats homolytic fission?
When a covalent bond breaks, each bonding atom receives an electron, forming two radicals.
What’s the molecular formula?
The number and type of atoms in each element
Whats nomenclature?
The naming system for compound.
What’s an organic compound?
Any compound which has carbon.
What’s a radical?
A species which has an unpaired electron
What’s a reaction mechanism?
A series of steps, showing the overall reaction by the breaking and forming of bonds by curly arrows.
What does saturated mean?
An organic compound with single bonds only c-c
Whats structural formula?
The minimal detail showing the arrangement of atoms in a molecule.
E.g butane is CH3(CH2)2CH3
What’s a structural isomer?
Compounds which have the same molecular formula, but different structural formulae.
What does unsaturated mean?
An organic compound which has one C=C, or a triple C-C bond, or an aromatic ring.
What’s a displayed formula?
The position of atoms and bonds between them.
E.g ethanol:
H-C-C-O-H
What’s a skeletal formula?
The simplified organic formula, showed by removing hydrogen atoms from alkyl chains.
It’s shown by lines, like this
/\—/
