Module 3: Group 2 Flashcards
(8 cards)
What’s a base?
A substance which can accept H+ ions. Group 2 compound can neutralize acidic soils in agriculture and CaCO3 are used as antacids.
What’s electron config?
The arrangement of electrons into orbitals and energy around nuclues of atoms.
Whats first ionization energy?
The removal of one mole of electrons from one gaseous atom.
Factors are:
The strength of attraction between electron and nuclues
The nuclear charge
The atomic radius
What’s the group 2 oxide?
A compound with the formula MO, M is a group 2 element. When group 2 oxide reacts with water, they form an alkaline solution, and the alkalinity increases the more you go down the group.
Whats oxidation?
It’s the loss of electrons, increases the oxidation number
OILRIG
Whats redox?
A reaction where one element is oxidized, and the other reduced. When its group 2, 2 electrons are lost they from 2+ ions. Group 2 has redox with water, oxygen and dilute acids.
Whats reduction?
The gain of electrons, the decrease in oxidation number
OILRIG
What’s the second ionization energy?
The removal of a mole of electrons from from a gaseous 1+ ions to form a mole of 2+ ions.
