Module 3: Reaction Rates Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is boltzmann distribution?
It’s a graph which has distribution of energies of molecules which are related to activation energy. Increasing temp increases the proportion of molecules with energy above the activation energy. Catalyst lowers activation energy
What’s a catalyst?
A substance which boosts ROR whichout being used. It provides an alternate route with lower activation energy. They make reactions economically viable and sustainable due to less energy being required.
Whats collision theory?
Molecules need sufficient energy, and correct orientation for a reaction to occur
What’s the definition of concentration?
The amount of a substance dissolved per unit unit of solution. Increase conc—> higher ROR —> more molecules, more collisions.
What’s a heterogeneous catalyst?
A catalyst that is in a different state to the reactants
What’s a homogeneous catalyst?
A catalyst in the same state as the reactants
Whats pressure?
The force a gas gives out on walls of something. Increase pressure —> higher ROR —> more molecules, so more frequent collisions.
Whats ROR?
A measure of how quickly reactants are used, or products are made. You could measure conc, volume of gas, or mass lost over a specific time.
