What is our approach for antimicrobial therapy in gastroenteritis caused by salmonella?
For nontypoidal, we dont use abx because it increases the risk of asymptomatic carrier status (unless pts are high risk for invasive disease which would include <1yr of age, immunocompromised, sick cell, cardiovascular or joint disease, sever gastroenteritis). For typoid, we tx with antibitoics like ceftriaxone. Invasive disease with nontypoidal is rare but with typoidal is high risk.
Transmission of salmonella is seen by
undercooked poultry/eggs
