Infection Hypersensitivity Autoimmunity Trauma ( including iatrogenic) Chemical/Toxic Radiation
Define Iatrogenic
Resulting from treatment from a physician

Vasoactive amines
Plasma proteases
Arachidonic acid metabolites ( eicosanoids)
Cytokines
What are examples of vasoactive amines?
Histamines, Serotonins
What are examples of plasma proteases?
Complement, Kinins
What are the three outcomes of acute inflammation?
Complete resolution
Scar tissue
Progresses to chronic inflammation
What are some examples of ocular response to inflammation?
Redness (Rubor) Oedema ( swelling) Exudate Discharge Cellular infiltration Development of papillae ( small bumps under eyelid)
What is exudate?
a mass of cells and fluid that has seeped out of blood vessels which is rich in protein and inflammatory cells
What are the three types of discharge?
Serous
Mucopurulent
Purulent
What does it mean to be serous?
A clear yellowish liquid which is protein-rich
What does Mucopurulent refer to?
Discharge containing mucus and pus
What does purulent refer to?
Discharge containing pus

In chronic inflammation what does cellular filtrate consist of ?
Lymphocytes & Macrophages
Give some examples of autoimmunity diseases of the eye
Moorens ulcer
Sympathetic Opthalmia
What is autoimmunity?
Represents immune attack of normal body tissues
