Connective Tissue L04 Flashcards
What are the 4 basic types of connective tissue
1) cartilage
2) bone
3) blood
4) connective tissue proper
Connective tissues are different as they are largely ……….
Acellular
What is connective tissue made up of
1) ground substance
2) fibres
3) a few cells
What is ground substance
A background substance, consisting of mainly glycoproteins and proteoglycans (e.g vitreous humour)
What are the different types of tissue fibres
1) collagen - thickest, with lots of strength and is unstretchable
2) elastic - composed of elastin, which stretch and return to original position
3) reticular - finner collagen fibres
Types of cells in connective tissue
1) Fibroblast - they secrete the fibres and ground substance. They are almost flat
2) plasma cells
3) macrophages
4) mast cells which produce histamine and heparin for inflammatory responses
What is the stroma of the cornea made up of
Tightly packed collagen fibres
What is loose aereolar connective tissue proper
Aereolar connective tissue is soft and pliable. Its can trap fluid causing bruising.
Example of loose aereolar connective tissue
Stroma of the iris, allowing it change shape
What is loose adipose connective tissue proper
It is made up of fat cells (adipocytes). In adults most fat is unilocular (yellow fat) , as each cell contains 1 lipid droplet. Newborns have brown fat.
What can fat serve as
1) energy store
2) insulation
3) protection
What is dense regular connective tissue proper
Compact connective tissue with regularly arranged collagen fibres, they have a lot of strength. For example a tendon
What is dense irregular connective tissue proper
Less regularly arranged collagen fibres, hence giving strength in all direction. For example, skin
In the eye the corneal stroma is made of …………. arranged collagen. This is what makes it …………
The collagen in the sclera, however is …………. arranged, making it ……….
1) regularly
2) transparent
3) irregularly
4) opaque
