Neoplasia L27 Flashcards
What is neoplasia?
Neoplasia is an abnormality of cell growth and multiplication characterised by the following:
- excessive cellular proliferation usually producing a tumour.
- uncoordinated growth occurring without apparent purpose
- persistence of excessive cell proliferation and growth even after inciting stimulus is removed
What is neoplasia described as on a molecular level?
A disorder of growth regulatory genes
What can neoplasia be triggered by?
Viruses Hereditary factors Failure of the immune system Chemical carcinogens Exposure to UV or X-ray radiation
How can neoplasms be classified?
By site of origin
Biological behaviour- i.e. melignant or benign
What does it mean to have a benign tumour?
A tumour that stays at site of origin - less dangerous than malignant tumours however damage by compressing neighbouring tissue.
What is dangerous about malignant tumours?
They are metastatic and so spread alongside having a rapid growth and spreading effect.
Can you get tumours that are in between malignant and benign?
Yes
What is cancer of a neural cell called?

What is cancer of schwaan cells called?
Schwannoma
What is cancer of the meninges called?
Meningioma
What is the most common ocular tumour?
Melanoma
How can intercranial tumours affect vision?
They can affect any point in the visual pathway
