cultural bias Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is the issue of cultural bias
psychological research has often ignored differences between cultures and developed theories based on the culture alone
what is cultural bias
the tendency to judge people in terms of ones own cultural assumptions
what is ethnocentrism
seeing the world only from ones own cultural perspective and believing this one perspective is normal and correct
what is universality
the idea that all behaviours can be generalised globally
what is cultural relativism
this insists that behaviour can be properly understood if the cultural context which it is occured is taken into consideration. it is an alternate view to universality
what is an emic approach
research on a single culture to understand it within a local context, isnt generalised to other cultures.
what is an etic approach
research across a number of cultures to discover that elements of behaviour might be universal
what is an imposed etic
imposing the judgements and values of one culture onto another
what are examples of culture bias in psychology
ethnocentrism/universalism- strange situation
ethnocentrism-theories of romantic relationships
what is the A03 for cultural bias
you can deal with it by recognising when it occurs-smith and bond surveyed research in one european textbook on social psychology and found that 66%of the studies were american, 32%european and 2 from the rest of the world. this shows psychological research is unrepresentative and can be improved by selecting a variety of cultural groups to study
it has significant real world effects- an example is the us army iq test, the test used was culturally biased towards dominant white majority. the test showed european immigrnts fell slightly below the us in terms of iq. this had a damaging effect on the attitudes of americans towards this group of people
