Q

how can we apply gender bias to psychology research

A

alpha bias-freud as he argues there are psychological differences between men and women

androcentrism-milgram only used male pps

Q

what is the A03 for gender bias

A

it stems from institutional sexism- feminists argue that lab experiments disadvantage women because research undertaken in the controlled world tells us very little about the experiences of women beyond such a setting. e.g. eagly andd johnson noted that studies in natural enviornments found women and men were judged as more similar in styles of leadership than what was found in a lab

it can be reduced by adopting a feminist approach-feminist psychology accepts that there are biological differences between males and females but suggests that socially determined stereotypes make a far greater contribution to perceived differences e.g. the evolutionary explanation for mate selection has been challenegd as reflecting victorian social norms rather than indictative of genuine innate differences

it offers practical application, eagly claims that females are less effective leaders than ,males- this helps researchers develop training programmes aimed at reducing the lack of female leaders in the real world

the implication of beta bias is that women and men are the same- arguing for equality between men and women draws attention away from womens needs and from differences in power between men and women-this is a limitation because in society where one group holds the most power seemingly neutral actions end up benefiting this group.
