Jake Brake Flashcards
(10 cards)
What does the exhaust jake brake do?
A hydraulic engine attached when energized altars engine exhaust valve operations and converts the diesel engine into an air compressor
How does the jake brake retard the effort of the drive wheels?
Accomplished by prematurely opening exhaust valve near top of compression stroke, releasing compression pressure to exhaust
The jake brakes control has how many different positions?
3 positions
Why do Diesel engine have less retarding effect than gas engines?
Due to lack of restriction in the intake manifold
When should the jake brake be used?
Descending grades
Driving in city traffic
When approaching stop lights
Whenever vehicle retarding is required
How long does it take the jake brake to activate and deactivate?
In less than 1/4 of a second
Should the engine be fairly warm before engaging the jake brake?
Yes, engine preheater water temperature is sufficient
For the 3 position switch of the jake brake, what are the settings and how many cylinders do they retard?
Low-activates 2 cylinders
Medium-activates 4 cylinders
High-activates 6 cylinders
When should you disengage the jake brake while driving?
On wet streets, can cause the drive wheels to lock up resulting in skidding
Can you engage the jake brake during pumping or aerial operation?
No can cause possible engine component damage or stalling
