MOD 3 - COURSE 1 - PT 8 - ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
- secretes hormones into blood stream to deliver to organs
what doe the hormones do?
bind to receptor - leading to cell response type specific
what are examples of hormone regulated processes
metabolism, growth, sleep
what organs in the head and neck are endocrine organs
- hypothalamus
- pineal gland
- adeno/neurohypophysis
- thyroid
what organs in the abdo cavity are endocrine organs
- liver
- pancreas
- adrenal glands
- kidneys
what organs in the reproductive organs are endocrine organs
ovary
uterus
placenta
testes
what hormones does the hypothalamus produce
ADH
CRH
GHRH
GNRH
OXT
what does ADH do?
- increase water permeability in nephrons - increase water reaborptions and increase blood volume
what does CRH do?
stimulated adrenocorticotropic hormone release - anterrior piturity (release corisol - stress managment etc)
what does GHRH do?
stimulate growth hormone - anterior pituitary
what does GNRH do?
stimulate FSH release from anterior pituitary
stimulate LH from anterior pituitary
what does OXT do?
promote uternine contraction and lactations - let down reflex
what does the pineal gland produce
melatonin
what does melatonin do?
monitor cardiac rythym - induce drowsiness and lower core temp
what does the adenohyphysis (anterior pituitary) produce
ACTH
FSH
LH
GH
PRL
TSH
What does ACTH do?
acetylcoricitropic hormone - stimulates corticosteroid and androgen syntehsis
what does FSH do?
stimulated maturation of ovarian follicales and in males stimulate spermatogensis
what does LH do
stimulate ovulation and formation of corpus luteum - in males stimulates testostrone systhesis
what does GH or somatotrophin do?
stimulate gorwth and cell reproduction - stimulate Insulin like growth factor from liver
what does PRL - prolactin do?
stimulates milk synthesis and release from mammary glands
what does TSH do? thydroid stimulating hormone
stimulaates thyroxine an dtriiodothyronine syntehsis and release from thrydoid gland
- stimulates iodine release by thyroid
what hormones are produced by the thyroid
calcitonin
T3 - triiodothyronine
T4 - Thyroxine
what does calcitonin do?
stimulates bone construction and inhibits calcium release from bone - reduced blood calcium
what soes T3 release do?
increase basal metabolic rate - promote protein syntehsis
