MOD 3 - COURSE 1 - PT 2 - tissue Flashcards
definition of tissue
- ensemble of similar cells - carry out specific function
what is the study of tissue called?
histology/histopathology
what are the 4 groups of animal tissue
- connective
- epithelial
- muscle
- nervous
what is the overall function of connective tissue
- gives shape to organs - hold them in place - provides metabolic support for other tissues and organs
what are the important components of connective tissue
collagen and elastin
what are the 4 types of connective tissue
- dense and loose
- adipose
- cartilage
- bone
- technically blood - for histology studies
what is the function of epithelial tissue
- cover organ surface - linked with semiimpermeable junctions - provides barrier between external enviornment and organ
- acts protective - can be specialised
3 example sof dapations of epithelial tisue that aids certain function
- keratinised - waterproof and strong i.e. skin
- microvilli - finger like extensions - increase absorptive surface area i.e. small intestines
- ciliated surface - move substance along surface tissu e- one directions i.e. trachea
what are msucle cells called
- myocytes
what are the 2 types of muscle tissue
- smooth muscle
- striated muscle
feature of smooth muscle
- involuntary muscle- not conscious controll
- constant state of readiness
- contractions - wavelength - spread throughout organ
where is smooth muscle found
- found in walls of some organs - exhibits involuntarty rythmic and tonic contractions - response to immediate environment
where is examples of smooth msucle located
- digestive tract, ducts of glands, blood vessels, uterus, urinary bladder
what is striated muscle
- cells organised regularly and repeated arrangements of contractile proteins - myofilaments
how can you further calssify striated muscle
- skeletal
- cardiac
what is skeletal muscle and whats it function
- voluntary muscle contraction
- anchored by tendons to bone
- effect skeletal movement - maintain posture
bound by tough connective tissue - fascia
what is cardiac - function and features
- involuntary msucle - more akin to structure of skeletal muscle - found only in heart
what are the main components of nervous tissue
- CNS (brain adn spinal cord)
- PNS (regulated and controls bodily functions and activity)
what does nerve tissue composed off (+function)
- composed of neurons which recieve and transmit impulses and neuroglia
what are glia
- assist with propogation of nerve impulses and providing nutrients to neuron
what are the functions of nervous syetm
- sensory input
- integration
- control of muscle and glands
- homeostasis
- mental activity
