MOD - COURSE 1 - PT 7 - NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
WHAT MAKES UP TEH NERVOUS SYSTEM
CNS
PNS
what is the CNS
brain and spinal cord
(dorsal cavity, cranial cavity and spinal cavity)
what is the function of brain
interprets - evaulates info- stimuli and direct response
what 3 structures make up the brain
cerebrum
cerebellum
brain stem
what is the function of the cerebellum
- base of head
- autonomic program i.e. walking
- posture and coordination
- eye, limbs, head movement
- motor
- involved in language and cognitive
cerebrum function…
- left and right hemisphere
- frontal, paietal and occipital lobe
- cerebral cortex - conscious thought
white matter - communication between cortex - corpus callosum - connect hemisphere
- hippocampus - short an dlong term memory - spatial navigation
- amyglada - process memory - emotion
- basal ganglia - coordination - voluntary movement
brain stem function….
- brain connect to spiinal cord
- 3 structure: - pons, medulla and midbrain
- medulla - extensions of spinal cord - control blood pressure and breathing
- pons - regulate breathing, sleep and taste
- midbrain - above pons - inclue nuclei - link distinct part of motor system
whats the peripheral nervous system
- nerves along body - ganglia - cluster of neurons
- PNS - connect CNS to limbs and organs
- somatic and autonomic NS
what is the somatic NS
- voluntary control of skeletal muscle - effeerent nerve - stimulates muscle - contraction - non sensory neruones connect msuscle with skin
what neurotransmitter is released by neurones of the SOMATIC NS
ACETYLCHOLINE
what is the function of the autonomic NS
involuntary and visceral
how can you catagorise the autonomic NS
- sympathetic NS and parasympathetic NS
sympathetic NS - function?
hormonal and neuronal stress- flight ot fight
what glands = assocaited with sympathetic NS - what do they produce
adrenal glands - produce catecholamines
what are the 2 types of sympathetic NS neurons
- pregnaglionic neurons
- post ganglionic
what is the pre-ganglionic neuone and what does it release
- located in the spinal cord to gnaglion
- releases acetylcholine
- short
what os the post-ganglionic neurone
located - ganglion to viscera #released catcholamines - noradrenaline and adrenaline
what affect does the sympathetic NS have on the eye
dilate pupil
what affect does the sympathetic NS have on the heart
increases rate and force of contraction
what affect does the sympathetic NS have on the lungs
- dilate bronchioles
what affect does the sympathetic NS have on the bloof vessels
constricts
what affect does the sympathetic NS have on the sweat glands
activate sweat secretion
what affect does the sympathetic NS have on the digestive tract
inhibits peristalsis
what affect does the sympathetic NS have on the kidney
increases renin secretion
