Why wouldn’t Adam’s Pa allow him to get water from the Jenks’s well?
Adam’s Pa felt that “this is our farm and we’ll run it without asking for charity from anyone.” He didn’t want to be beholden to any man.
Why didn’t Adam want to get water from the “crick”?
Adam complained that “everyone laughs at me when I drive the wagon through town. And filling all those tubs from the crick takes forever.”
Why was Uncle Poot called to the farm?
Uncle Poot is an downer man. He uses a forked stick to find water.
Why did Uncle Poot give his dowsing rod to Adam?
Adam asked for it. Uncle Poot said sure that he could cut another anytime. But not to expect it to find water for you. The power’s not in the dowsing rod but in the person holding it.
What did Adam wish for?
I wish we had water all over this farm. Enough for waking and cooking and drinking and for the crops, and…and with plenty to spare.
How did Adam influence his mother to make a decision about the fence?
Adam pointed to the one spot that didn’t get any sun all day long - the worst place.
Why did Adam think he had the gift for dowsing?
When he picked up the dowsing rod “the prongs started twisting and turning in his hands like live things. The pointer jerked straight down”. It was just as Uncle Poot had described. So maybe he did have the gift.
How did Adam’s wish come true?
He got water. From each of the fence post holes Adam had dug, water was gushing forth as if spewed from a fire hose.
