As groups of people began settling down, they found the need for an organized way to resolve problems and oversee tasks such as distributing food.

Name some common features of a nation-state.
- Clearly defined borders
- Have governments, laws and authority over citizens
- Most are divided into smaller states or provinces that contain cities and towns

- Autocracies - ruled by a single person
- Oligarchies - ruled by a small group of people
- Democracy - citizens hold political power
- Authoritarian - government holds political power (example - communism)
- Monarchy - ruled by a monarch

- Powers are defined by laws that limit its action
- Decides issues by majority rule
- Can not take away the basic rights and freedoms of minority groups or individuals
