5th - Science Unit 4 Lesson 3 Flashcards
Anything that interferes with the normal functions of the body.
Disease
An organism that is too small to be seen with just our eyes
Microorganism
The process of heating foods to high temperatures to slow the grow of bacteria
Pasteurization
A chemical that kills disease-causing bacteria.
Antibiotic
A preparation made from dead or weakened pathogens that can help prevent some diseases.
Vaccine
Where are microorganism?
Everywhere
Why are microorganism important?
- Provide larger organisms with some of the food and oxygen they need to survive.
- Return nutrients to the environment by breaking down dead organisms
What are some examples of unicellular organisms?
- All bacteria (but not all are microscopic)
- Protists such as Euglena, amoebas, paramecia
- Yeast (a fungi)
What are some examples of multicellular microorganisms?
- Most fungi such as mushrooms
2. Dust mites
What is the difference between unicellular and multicellular microorganisms?
Unicellular have only one cell where multicellular have more than one.
Some harmful bacteria, protists, and fungi can cause diseases or disease causing agents
Pathogens
What can microorganism cause?
Diseases
What are diseases caused by pathogens that can be passed from one organism to another?
Infectious diseases
What bacteria causes a disease called strep throat by attacking cells in the throat?
Streptococcus
Some diseases such as tetanus and scarlet fever are caused by what?
By producing poisonous substances called toxins
