Preacher said she should tell Stevie she was sorry if she said anything to hurt his feeling. And the he, the preacher, was sure Stevie just wants to be your friend. Some people have a strange way of going about making friends.
Why did Otis go to jail?
Otis was told by the police to stop playing his guitar on the street. That it was against the law. The whole time they were telling him to stop he kept on playing. And that made them mad so the tried to put handcuffs on him. Otis didn’t like that cause he couldn’t play his guitar with them on. So he hit one of the police man.
Who spit out the lozenge? Why?
Sweetie Pie spit the lozenge out because it tasted like not having a dog.
What idea does Opal get while she is reading Gone with the Wind to Gloria Dump? Describe her plans.
Opal gets the idea to have a party. She starts naming people to invite (Miss Franny Block, the preacher, Otis, Sweetie Pie); Otis can play his guitar; make some food (peanut-butter and egg salad sandwiches.
What did Gloria Dump make Opal promise?
Opal had to invite them Dewberry boys.
How does Opal persuade Otis to come to the party?
Opal says she will work (sweeping, arranging and dusting) for him for free for a week.
Why is Opal so glad to see Amanda at the party?
Amanda had her hair all curled up; looking all shy and not as mean as usual. Opal wanted to tell her she knew about Carson and that she understood about losing people but she didn’t say anything. Opal was just extra nice.
Why did Opal think the Dewberry brothers might not come to the party?
Because they were afraid to go to a party at a witch’s house.

How did Opal occupy her mind while she searched for Winn Dixie? Why did she do this?
She started on a list of ten things she knew about Winn Dixie then she kept going over and over the list so she could memorize it the same way she had memorized the list of things she knew about her mother. Then she began thinking of her mother.
Why did the Preacher begin to cry?
Because Opal shouted at him that “he always gives up”; that he didn’t even go out looking for her mom when she left; and just let her run off too.
Why were the people invited to the party able to enjoy themselves while Opal was searching for her dog?
Because Winn Dixie was there at Gloria’s house (under Gloria’s bed) the whole time.
How does Dunlap surprise Opal in the yard?
He held out his hand to help Opal up.
