5th Science U 3 Lesson 2/3 - Study Guide Flashcards
Push or pull of an object moving forward
Thrust
What are the units of force?
The Newton (N) and the pound (lb.)
As the plane moves forward, air moves around the wings and creates a force that raises the plane into the air
Lift
Broad, flat surfaces of the plane hit the hair and pull back on the rest of the plane
Drag
How does mass and distance affect the gravity between two objects?
Increasing the mass increases the force, and increasing the distance decreases the force.
What 2 factors does friction depend on
1) the roughness of the surfaces of the objects
2) how much force is used to push the two objects together
What does friction create.
Friction creates heat. (Friction slows down objects for a big events each other and that’s why when you rub your hands together they generate heat)
Explain how balanced and unbalanced forces act on an object
We used the example car, bus, ball, rolling pencil.
Balanced forces act on an object without changing its motion. A force that causes an object to change its motion is called an unbalanced force. (Newtons first law of motion: an object at rest tends to stay at rest and object in constant motion tends to stay in motion, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.)
Know the law of inertia: what is needed for an object to change its motion?
An unbalanced force
Diagrams: be able to tell which object will experience more friction and Why. Explain how mass and force affect acceleration. What would you have to do to keep constant acceleration of the masses force changed
When we draw diagrams of forces, we often use arrows to represent the direction and the strength of the force
What does work effect?
Work affects objects
What is the formula for work and how do you calculate it
Force used multiplied by distance when the force was applied
What units are work and energy in?
Joules
List different forms of potential energy
Chemical potential energy - Energy in the links between Atoms and molecules
elastic potential energy - Energy stored by something that can stretch or compress
gravitational potential energy- The energy and object possesses due to its position above the earth surface
List different forms of kinetic energy
Heat - vibration of particles
electricity - kinetic energy of electrons
Sound - Connecticut energy of particles as they move in waves
Light - Connecticut to do that moves in the form of waves
