Q

Where do fossil fuels come from?

A

Is a material that formed from the decay of ancient organisms and is used today as a source of energy.

Coal - 1. Dead organisms in a swamp form peat.

        2. Peat is covered with layers of sediment.
        3. Pressure turns peat into coal.

Oil & Gas -

        1. Dead organisms fall to the ocean floor.
        2. Dead organisms are buried in sediment.
        3. Pressure forms oil and gas.

Q

What is used to determine the age of a fossil?

A

The Law of Superposition - in general, each layer of rock is older than the layer above it and younger than the layer below it.

Q

What does sedimentary rock found in fossils tell us?

A

Almost all fossils are found in sedimentary rock. Scientists can use fossils to learn more about ancient environments.

Q

Where does geothermal energy come from?

A

Inside the Earth - heat produced inside Earth causes geysers and hot springs.

Q

What are some examples of alternate energy sources?

A
  1. Energy from wind - windmills turn the motion of air into electricity.
  2. Energy from moving water - dams can generate electricity from water and energy in ocean waves can be captured using turbines.
  3. Solar energy- a solar panel captures solar energy
  4. Energy in the nucleus of atoms - Nuclear energy
  5. Geothermal energy - heat from inside the earth
  6. Biomass - plant and animal materials that are used as fuel.

Q

Understand that the lower the rock layer, the older the fossil.

A

If you found one fossil in a top layer of rock and another fossil in a lower layer, the relative age of the fossil in the lower layer is older than the fossil in the higher layer.

Q

Name some examples of renewable resources.

A

Fish, forests, wind, water power, sunlight

16
Q

Name some examples of Nonrenewable resources.

A

Fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas and coal

17
Q

Name some examples of inexhaustible resources.

A

Energy from the Sun and wind

18
Q

Be able to list 3 ways to conserve nonrenewable resources.

A
  1. Turn lights off when you leave a room.
  2. Turn off electronic equipment when you aren’t using it.
  3. Use water-conserving show heads and take shorter showers.
  4. Turn off hot water when you aren’t using it.
  5. Carpool or use public transportation whenever you can.
  6. Turn heat down or air conditioning up when you are not home.
  7. Insulate windows and doors to prevent heat loss.
19
Q

Be able to explain the formation of one of the following fossil fuels: oil, natural gas or coal

A

COAL:

  1. Dead organisms in a swamp form peat.
  2. Peat is covered with layers of sediment.
  3. Pressure turns peat into coal.

OIL AND NATURAL GAS:

  1. Dead organisms fall to the ocean floor.
  2. The dead organisms are buried in sediment.
  3. Pressure forms oil and gas.
